Even as a naturally skinny girl, I always used to be envious of the Victoria’s Secret models. It just wasn’t fair that the likes of Tyra Banks, Elle Macpherson and Adriana Lima could be slim AND have sexy curves rather than the usual “boyish” or “athletic” shape.
I never felt I could really complain to my friends because skinny girls just aren’t allowed to complain. Our bodies issues don’t seem to count in this weird society we live in.
To be fair, I am happy with my body but the culture I’m most influenced by celebrates the curvy “coke bottle” body, and while people would kill to be a size 6 like me, it’s my dream to go about 2 sizes up. Typical right?
Thankfully as a African woman, I’ve got some shape. My bum gets a fair amount of attention and while I’m not flat chested, I grew up seriously hating the fact I didn’t have curvy hips.
Meanwhile, I got a yearly reminder that the VS models (and some other lucky girls in this world) don’t have this problem. They have it all and it made me (and the rest of the world) rather jealous – but also happy for them lol.
But seeing pictures of the VS 2013 show highlighted something that I’ve been thinking for quite some time now. These days the angels are way too skinny. Not really slim and sexy, but more verging on flat and skinny. Absolutely gorgeous faces but for me, their bodies are just lacking in bouncy jiggly goodness that VS shows are famous for.
Personally I reckon having models like Jourdan Dunn, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and Behati Prinsloo is only okay if the VS bosses add the likes of Crystal Renn and Robyn Lawley to the line up.
Even Alesssandra Ambrosio and the beloved Gisele Bundchen were a tad too boyish in the waist to become the VS icons they are but what do I know eh?
I do hope we get to a point where the VS shows have a representative for every body type. Where skinny girls like myself can look at Candice Swanepeol and Doutzen Kroes rocking their undies and curvy ladies can see the likes of Tyra Banks (with the bootylicious figure she has now) and Robyn Lawley working the runway.
Something I do enjoy seeing is the variety of nationalities that strut their stuff on the runway. At least we know they ensure that all ethnicities are represented on the night!
