Over four years ago, I wrote a little post about my experience with Proactiv. And while I really had hoped my beauty journey would have resulted in the perfect routine by now, it just hasn’t happened.
So when the lovely ladies at Sparkle PR reunited me with the brand and improved proactiv+ kits to celebrate it’s availability in the UK through Boots, I couldn’t help but wonder if Proactiv was actually the long lost skin care love that I needed to let back into my life.
Review: I forgot just how effective proactiv can be only spot-prone skin. After the first week I could already see a difference and I wondered how on Earth I could ever live a life without it again.
It was clear to see what changes have been made to the kit and I’ll just give a brief overview about how it product worked for me.
Skin exfoliating exfoliator – This cleanser wasn’t harsh or super grainy and I’m sure it would be okay to use on even sensitive skin. I really enjoyed using this and felt that it left space to use a weekly scrub if you wanted to add another layer of cleaning to the regime (I didn’t just to see how Proactiv worked all alone).
Retexturising toner – This toner was also nice and calming on the skin. I wouldn’t really say it really did much but I always feel that way about toners. When I used it alone with moisturisers, my skin got oily AF. But nothing’s new there.
Pore targeting cleanser – This was a light but kind of sticky-ish cream which didn’t do a crazy amount for me because I don’t really have big pores. When it dries out, the build up of oil on my skin during the day seemed to clash with the product and it caused it to kind of rub off when I touched me face.
Complexion perfecting hydrator – The same thing happened with the hydrator. However, I found that my skin seemed to be a tad less oily when I used the hydrator alone.
Skin purifying mask – This mask didn’t dry out and cake up like the ones I’m used to, but it definitely helps to clear the skin up that bit more on top of the normal cleansing routine.
Mark fading pads – This was the only item that seemed to have the old formula still in place. As soon as I took the pad out of the pack, the amount of alcohol hits my nose and eyes with immediate force. After all I’ve read about alcohol heavy products drying out the skin and causing more oil to be, I was sure to only use it lightly on my skin.
Free pads – This was just a nice touch. One side of the pad was textured for a bit more cleansing action in the evenings, while the other side was smooth. There were three packs in my kit and they lasted for the entire time I used the set.
Verdict: Proactiv definitely does what it says on the tin. But sadly, the moisturisers just didn’t work for me this time around. Definitely worth a try if you have problematic skin!
I might just end up writing another post in four years time about how I just use the cleanser alongside other things and have finally found my perfect routine. Here’s to hoping!
